HISTORY OF TEA IN MAURITIUS

The first tea plant was introduced in Mauritius by father Galloys, a French priest in 1760. Ten years later, Pierre Poivre planted tea on a larger scale.  In the 18th century, Robert Farquhar encouraged commercial tea cultivation and had a tea garden at Le Réduit.

BOIS CHERI TEA FACTORY

The tea factory of Bois Chéri operating since 1892 is the first and the biggest tea producer in Mauritius.  It was built by Bour Le Breton Company and bought by the Guimbeau family in 1958. Le Domaine de Bois Chéri located close to 500 meters above sea level offers ideal conditions for growing tea. It forms part of La Route du Thé, du Rhum et de La Vanille and holds some of the oldest tea plantations of the island.

The Bois Chéri Tea
Le Chalet du Domaine de Bois Chéri with a panoramic view on the southern coast, offers Bois Chéri tea tasting, a restaurant and a shop. An experience which can only be lived and not described.
