In 1726, the first salt pans was built in the South-East of Port-Louis by Jean Dominique Caudan, who came to l’Isle de France (Mauritius) from his native Languedoc (France).
Salt manufacturer by trade, he signed a contract with the East India Company, with the aim of replenishing ships and preserving foodstuffs.
The salt production continued into the 19th and 20th centuries around Port-Louis and in Tombeau Bay. Throughout the years, the salt pans were moved to the South-West of the island, in Tamarin and Black River, due to more favorable weather conditions.
A PINCH OF SALT is much more than a family business which started in 2016, it is also bringing together a group of men and women who shares the same passion and values.
